Thoughts on Various Subjects

Lord knows I am way too old to daydream about competing in the Olympics, but then again I have no acting or screenwriting talent and that doesn't stop me every year come Oscar time.

I've already perfected my slow-motion wide-eyed pensive look for Bob Costas's telling of my rags-to-riches, I'm-the-underdog-root-for-me biographical moment.

Now I just have to work on my athletic ability. Dammit.

This weekend has confirmed my undying love for Zach Braff. As a service to everyone, I order you all to (a) go see Garden State, NOW, and 2) don't read Ebert's review. It's not that he didn't like it, but he goes through the entire plot in his review. Isn't that illegal or something? Shouldn't it be? I think it should.

Watching the swimming at the Olympics reminds me of the few years (was it only a few years? It seemed like so long) when I was on the local swim team. I was a proud member of the Bonnie Brae Barricudas ("The Mean Green Machine"), and I had more than a few first place ribbons. I even won a trophy once. My most vivid memory of swimming is actually what my mom used to do upon picking me up from every practice. She would drive me to Winchell's for a vanilla cake donut with sprinkles. Winchell's was actually in the opposite direction of our house, but Mom would take me there every time.

Donuts. Good times.

I bought Gulliver's Travels and Other Writings by Jonathan Swift yesterday because, although I was a literature major-- even going so far as taking a class in Swift-- I have never read it. How the hell did that happen? In any case, I will try to throw in clever references to Swift in the coming entries, just because I can.
